History of Republic Day of India

  • History of Republic Day of India

26th January, 1950 can be cited as one of the very important days in Indian History. The constitution of India came into being on this very day and India attained the status of a true sovereign nation. Though India attained freedom from British rule on 15th August, 1947, the country was still under British rule. King George VI was the ruler of India and was the real head of the Indian Government at that time.

    History of Republic Day

The Indian National Congress meet held on December 31st, 1930 was the first occasion when any reference to celebrating 26th January as a republic day was made. Pt Jawaharlal Lal Nehru hoisted the Indian flag and vowed to celebrate 26th January as India’s republic day.

As the days of India’s Independence came close, a drafting committee which was created by the constituent assembly came into force. The committee was headed by Dr. Bheem Rao Ambedkar and has six other members who acted as advisors to the committee. The earnest efforts which the committee made in drafting the Indian constitution in its present shape can be judged from the fact that the committee took around 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to give the final shape to the Indian constitution.

The constitution at the time of its commissioning had 395 articles which were listed in 22 parts and had 8 schedules. The constitution was adopted by the constituent assembly on 26th November, 1949.

The constituent assembly then finalized the date for bringing the constitution into effect as 26th January, 1950. With the constitution of India coming into force, the nation became a true sovereign and secular entity.

Dr. Rajender Prasad hoisted the Indian Tricolour on 26th January, 1950 and India became a true secular nation. The tradition continues till date and the President of India hoists the flag at Raj Path amidst much fanfare every year.
