Actors can't stick to just one medium says Vishwajeet

  • Actor Vishwajeet Pradhan, who belongs to Meerut in UP, has straddled both the film and TV world for a long time now, acted as he has in films like Rakhta Charitra, Fareb, Zakhm, Raaz and the soon to be released Kya Dilli Kya Lahore, as well as the serial Maryada: Lekin Kab Tak?. But the experience doesn't make him complacent in the least.

For, the actor is attuned to the reality of the profession. As he puts it, "Both films and TV have their compunctions, their positives and negatives. For example, I explored a character at great length in Maryada... which can be the ultimate high for an actor, but I won't get this luxury as a film person. "

"Then again, it's physically tough to be doing serials day in and day out. Likewise, the exposure in films can be huge because the canvas is huge and a film's reach is greater. However, as a character actor in a film, I can easily get lost because yaar, ek hero ka sidekick kitna attention kheech lega? I may have given my best performance but what if the role gets edited? So, you see both the mediums have their own peculiarities and so, no actor can afford to stick to one medium now."
At the same time, Pradhan's first love could well be called films. Having just completed Karan Arora and Vijay Raaz's Kya Dilli Kya Lahore whose first look was launched at the Wagah border on August 14, he says it's films like these that manage to keep his faith alive in the medium.

"The simple, sweet films without the star power often manage to tell a better story. For instance, this one talks about the bond between the two nations and trust me, when we were at the Wagah border, our countries' differences seemed so irrelevant. It was August 14, the Pakistani Independence day and would you believe it, there was a party happening right across the dividing line. It was so near by that I could just walk across and lift the cover of the dishes to see what was on the menu! But of course I couldn't do that. A whole series of permissions are needed for that one activity..."
Spoken like a true politico, an interest Pradhan keeps alive despite his acting commitment. But at the same time, he insists his political role will not go beyond "assisting the party in its activities to the extent I can."

Roughly translated, we presume Pradhan to mean that he is not ready for an active political life, despite having served a two-year stint with Congress before quitting and moving onto campaigning for Akhilesh Yadav earlier this year.

"Acting keeps me quite busy and right now I realize it will be tough to contribute in a meaningful manner to the party. Aur phir, once an actor becomes a politician, I have noticed that people begin to have larger than life expectations from him. I remember when I was in Allahabad University, Amitabh Bachchan had come to campaign in Allahabad. I realized then the sort of expectations people had from him. Actually, people also need to understand and give time for a star turned politico to deliver. Jaise wo films mein ek punch se villain to maar dete hain, in real life problems will not disappear like that," says Vishwajeet.
