Human Beings communicate with each other with the use of different languages like English, Hindi, Spanish, etc. Computers are machines, non living things, so is there a way to communicate with them. Yes, we can give instructions to the computer with the help of programming languages. Programming Languages are a set of rules that are designed for us to perform the tasks by interacting with the computer.
Over the years, many Programming Languages have been developed. Languages are basically divided as High level and Low level languages. Some of the early programming languages are FORTRAN, BASIC, COBOL. FORTRAN was used to write programs for scientific applications. BASIC was easy to learn but it was not very powerful. These early languages were not very efficient and had lots of problem. It was difficult for programmers to program in these languages. So there was a need for an improved programming language.
The birth of modern programming began with the arrival of C language. It changed the way programming was approached and thought about. C language was invented by Dennis Ritchie. The creation of C is considered by many to have marked the beginning of modern age of computer languages. It was called as a programmer's language. During late 1970's C became the dominant computer programming language. C lead to the development of C++. It was invented by Bjarne Stroustrup in 1979. It was much more efficient than C and provided much more features allowing programmers to manage complex programs.
By the end of 1980 a new programming language was developed. Arguably it is one of the most widely use language today - JAVA. It was developed by James Gosling and his team at Sun Microsystems. Java is almost similar to C++ but it is way more better and adds new feature. The best feature about java is that it is platform independent. Then java led to the development of C#. Which is based on Microsoft's .NET platform.
There are a lot of programming languages, but only a few are widely use for programming purposes. Some of them are C, C++, Java, C#.
