  26 Jan 2015 marks India’s 66th Republic Day. It is the day on which the Constitution of India came into force. The date January 26 was chosen as the designated date of Republic Day because it coincides with the anniversary of the Purna Swaraj.

  Every year a different foreign head of state is invited by the Indian government as an official guest to witness the celebrations. Last year, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo was the chief guest. Well this year the chief guest is U.S President Barack Obama. Barack Obama is the first sitting United States president to attend India’s Republic Day celebrations. Barack Obama will join India’s President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to witness the parade. All the main celebrations are held at New Delhi.

   

  Large number of representatives from Indian army, navy and the air force take part in the Republic Day parade and celebrations that is held in New Delhi. Dozens of aircraft's fly over Rajpath during this parade. On Republic Day some of the major national awards like the Ashoka Chakra, Veer Chakra, Param Veer Chakra, Kirti Chakra are awarded to the deserving personals.
