Dibakar gets an open letter from Martin

  Director Dibakar Banerjee is on cloud nine with the success of his recent release ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy’. The latest we heard that the director got an open letter from Martin.

  Here are the details for you folks,

  

  Dear Dibakar 
  
  You have set the trend for grim, hatke cinema that catches the viewer unawares. Your style of story-telling is entirely your own and this is what was seen even in a small segment in BOMBAY TALKIES where four directors displayed their talent. Yours was a masterpiece. The way you exploited Nawazuddin Siqddiqui's talent was amazing, not to mention the wide camera angle that spoke the unspoken words. 
  
  KHOSLA KA GHOSLA, OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE, LOVE *** AUR DHOKA and SHANGHAI were other films that had your unmistakable stamp of creativity. You scared the viewers as well as entertained them. 
  
  So what went wrong with DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY? The film was good, but it was just that: Good. There was no Dibakar Banerjee stamp of authenticity over the film like it has been in the above-mentioned earlier films. What happened? Did you have to tweak the subject to suit the Yash Raj banner? 
  
  If that is the case, it's sad for an ardent fan of yours like me and the many others who throng to see your kind of cinema. You are not a commercial thinking businessman but a creative individual who believes in his craft and what he has to offer. 

   

  After dwelling on the possibilities of what could have gone wrong, I would like to believe that associating with a banner as big as Yash Raj and then very subtly getting into doing what they might have thought was the right thing to do, did the film in. 
  
  The plot was haphazard with no continuity. It was as if at will that you created scenes and expected the audience to fit in the puzzle. That's good, but the blocks to fit the puzzle never matched the storyline. 
  
  Moreover, what was the need to keep the film deliberately dark throughout? Was it to hide these obvious flaws? 
  
  Neeraj Pandey's BABY (another fantastic film) suffered from a similar fate with an unnecessary female angle being forcefully fed in. And though both of you might deny having had to bear the influence of the ‘outside hand', the fact remains that your work was tampered with. 
  
  You can't fool a discerning, creative eye! 
  
  Remember, you are a bigger name in this industry than any banner. Stick to your style of story-telling. It's unique and nerve-wracking. It brings cinema close to reality.
