    New Year's Eve Movie Review

Considerably less syrupy than last year’s Valentine’s Day, but cut from the same sappy cloth, New Year’s Eve, directed by Pretty Woman’s Garry Marshall, features an all-star cast of big-ticket names playing hopelessly mushy New Yorkers whose lives conveniently intersect on – what else but – December 31!. The Big Apple setting lends this film more character than the generic ‘any-town’ feel of the LA-based Valentine’s Day, and there is some pleasure to be had taking in the sights of a decorated Manhattan in the holidays. But Marshall continues to exploit every conceivable scenario for schmaltz. So you have innocent first kisses, ex-lovers reuniting, midnight rendezvous, dying fathers, newborn babies, husbands at war, and strangers trapped together. By the end of it, you won’t need any sugar for your tea.I’m going with two out of five for New Year’s Eve. It’s frothy and forgettable. Just don’t expect anything more.

A collage of characters and stories, this one's a mixed bag. While there's nothing original to keep you amazed, there's enough happening, here and there, to keep you involved. In case you get bored with the lack lustre going-ons between one set of people, there's someone else to focus your attention on. That's the advantage of having so many characters.... It's a great cast, but unfortunately they all have too little to do. Time-pass fare.

Cluttered with just too many beautiful people, New Year's Eve struggles to instill life-affirming feelings in viewers. Most of the stars in the film look like they've been discharged from rehab but are showing symptoms that would get them wheeled right back in.All these stories are laboriously intertwined, some surprisingly so, most ridiculously so. There is so much happening at one time, that Marshall cannot dedicate enough screen-time to adequately flesh-out even two stories. The film is filled with one-liners which are frequently funny only because of their sheer cheesiness.Although the film doesn't boast of a single distinctive performance, New Year's Eve does have a warmth about it, which is largely to do with the New York setting, and that friendly feeling, fake though it may be, that occurs in the month of December.
