Studies have shown that moderate intake of red wine lowers the risk of heart disease. The protective effect is not due to its alcohol content but the presence of resveratrol, a non-alcoholic constituent. Resveratrol acts as an antioxidant, antimutagen and anti-inflammatory agent, thus protecting the body against cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Also, antioxidants in red wine called polyphenols may help protect the lining of blood vessels in your heart.
